Yes! If you have the time and like learning new things you have nothing to lose it can be a great way to get online. When and if you are ready for a custom website, your new knowledge can be helpful in communicating your ideas and needs to your web designer.
Their are many online companies that offer free website and have easy to use interfaces for adding your content to their pre-designed templates. I don't have enough experience with any to make a recommendation, but they can be easily researched with some online searching. A word of caution, many of these services come and go, you should have a plan to move your content if needed. Often they place advertising on your webpage to help offset their costs.
I always recommend that you buy your domain name from a separate third party registrar. It will make it much easier to maintain control of your internet properties and services if a problem arises.
